Job Description: 

Gas plant operators help control, supervise and maintain the gas processing facility. A gas plant operator processes oil or gas for a variety of consumers through the operation of sophisticated and complex processing equipment, and by controlling compressors to maintain specified pressures on pipelines. He or she monitors equipment functioning, observes temperature, level and flow gauges, and performs regular unit checks in order to ensure that all equipment is operating as it should.  A key duty of gas plant operators is to ensure the safety of equipment and personnel on site.

Roles & Responsibilities: 

  1. Controlling operation of inlet, residue and NRU compressors, amine treating unit, cryogenic plant, propane refrigeration equipment, nitrogen rejection unit, and product storage
  2. Starting and shutting down plant equipment 
  3. Recording, reviewing, and compiling operations records, test results and gauge readings such as temperatures, pressures, concentrations, and flows 
  4. Determining the cause of abnormal pressure, temperature, and level variance, and recommending actions to alleviate problem

Skill sets required 

A person interested in this career path should have the following qualifications:

  1. Well-developed skills in operation monitoring
  2. Complex problem solving
  3. Judgment and decision making
  4. Quality control analysis, and troubleshooting 
  5. The recommended education level is a minimum of a high school or GED diploma, plus on-the-job training. 
  6. Post-secondary education in process plant technology from community colleges or vocational-technical institutes will greatly improve job opportunities and pay.
